Custodial history |
Dawes Son and Prentice of Rye, solicitors, acted as town and vestry clerks for Winchelsea corporation and parish for most of the 19th century. It has been noticed (see the introduction to RYE and WIN) that the archives of both corporations were augmented with documents deposited by the firm. The original arrangement of PAR 511 (which can be recovered from the superseded list), containing as it does several series with self-contained chronological runs, strongly suggests thatthis archive may also have been bulked out by documents deposited by the firm. Many of the series of financial records (for example PAR 511/38/3-4) end in 1874; that date may relate to the death of the incumbent, the Revd J J West, in 1872, or the transfer of the clerkship from Edwin Nathaniel Dawes to his son Walter Dawes in 1876.
|
