Ministry of Labour and Predecessors: Nominal and Subject Indexes to Correspondence
Description and record details
Reference | LAB 7 |
---|---|
Title | Ministry of Labour and Predecessors: Nominal and Subject Indexes to Correspondence |
Date | 1897-1941 |
Description | Nominal and subject indexes to the main file series of early correspondence and papers of the Ministry of Labour. A few papers referred to are later in date than 1933. The correspondence and papers to which these indexes refer are now fully listed on the Catalogue and these indexes have therefore been superseded. |
Arrangement | These indexes take the form of docket books. There are separate sets of docket books for each file series. Within each docket book there are separate dockets for each file. To go from the docket to the associated file, identify from the relevant docket both the box number (usually circled) and the registered number (in the top right hand corner). Care should be taken not to confuse the registered number and the preservation number. Both are given in the top right hand corner of the docket, but the preservation number usually appears below the registered number and is preceded by the abbreviation 'Pres No'. The reference required can then be constructed by citing the department and series reference, LAB 2, followed by the box number, followed by the registered number, e.g. LAB 2/78/IC1425/4/1918. Alternatively it may be possible to move from the docket to the associated file by searching the catalogues limited to series LAB 2, for the file title given in the docket. |
