Description | Folio 581. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, regarding the proposal to tender for the contract to break up an allotment of moorland in order to provide work for the able-bodied poor. The Board considered that to tender for work on land they did not own would not be consistent with the guardians' legal powers or with the interests of the local labourers. The use of able-bodied paupers to work on land which is already occupied by the union would receive the Board's immediate favourable attention. Paper Number: 5393/1855. Poor Law Union Number 571. Counties: Yorkshire West Riding. |
