Description Folio 134. Letter from Charles Bond, Clerk to the Guardians of the Axminster Poor Law Union, to E Chadwick [Edwin Chadwick], Secretary to the Poor Law Commission. Acknowledges receipt of letter dated 19 February [1846] and enclosed copy of letter from W North [of Ham, Stockland near Honiton]. North's letter is complaint regarding his entitlement to make coffin for pauper child who was recently deceased. The issues raised in North's letter have been brought before the board of guardians and the facts established were that the child survived a few hours from birth and after death occurred the parents of the child ordered a coffin, for which they paid 2s 6d, at their own expense. The order for the coffin was not given by Relieving Officer or any other parochial officer and the cost of coffin will not be paid from monies raised for the Relief of the Poor. The board of guardians consider North has no cause for complaint. Annotation - Inform the complainant of the effect of the explanation. 2 March 1846 Paper Number: 2244/A/1846.
