Description | Folios 93-94. Letter from Edward Gulson, [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], Newark, to George Nicholls, [Commissioner], regarding the following: Revision of the pauper lists of the Basford Poor Law Union, with many Guardians present, but Mr Nixon [Thomas Nixon, Chairman of the Basford Board of Guardians] absent. Agreement that the pleasure ground - the market garden of 18 acres and the fine drawing-room in the house are to be done away with. The approaching election of Guardians and mitigating any possible strife in Nottingham. The Mayor compares the course taken with that taken in Leicester [Leicestershire] where each political party had sent agents to Nottingham canvassing and collecting proxy votes as if voting for an MP [Member of Parliament]. The Municipal Reform Bill and Borough magistrates being ex-officio Guardians. He is off to Boston [Lincolnshire], to meet parish officers then to the opening of the Mansfield Poor Law Union. Postscript states, What has been done at [Witney] and Saint Pancras [London]? Paper Number: 2038/C/1836. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. |
