Description | Folio 186. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to the clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union [William Ashton]. They acknowledge receipt of his letter of 10 December 1836, reporting the meeting on 6 December 1836. With reference to his enquiry as to whether a pauper can demand relief in a workhouse, the Commissioners state that the guardians are to 'judge of the necessity for relief in every case, and to administer it according to the wants of the applicant in accordance to the Rules for their government & guidance'.
