Description | Folio 219. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to the clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union [William Ashton], and copy to be sent to the auditor of the Basford Poor Law Union [John Riley]. They acknowledge receipt of Ashton's letter of 8 March 1837 explaining the expenses linked to an inquest in the workhouse. They inform him that the Coroner's fee and the allowance to the jury are not legally payable from the poor rates, and cannot be allowed. However, the payment to the constable may be paid from the poor rates, if it is for his re-imbursement for reasonable expenses actually incurred by him in giving notice to the coroner, but not otherwise.
