Description | Folio 303. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to [William Ashton], Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union. They acknowledge receipt of his letter of 15 July 1837 forwarding the abstracts of the accounts of the Basford Poor Law Union, with the list of other expenses. They comment that the items for relief in kind should not be allowed 'unless reported regularly according to Rule to the next Meeting of the Board of Guardians and if then allowed by them - the amounts should be added to the Outdoor relief lists - and the Officers repaid the sums - No relief can be sanctioned unless reported and allowed by Board of Guardians'. The costs of coffins and fees should be reported in the same way, and charged (when allowed) in a similar manner. Concerning the costs for pay rooms, the Commissioners state that 'Any cottager would allow the use of a room in which to pay the poor once a week' for 6d per week or 6s 6d per quarter, and they feel that too much is being paid. They also say that the parishes should produce receipts. 'Premium of apprenticing' is an item of which the Commissioners disapprove as it puts the children of paupers on a better footing than the children of the independent labourers who are unable to pay premiums. In future, if any premium is proposed, it must be referred to the Commissioners before being agreed. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. |
