Description | Folios 87-124. Letter from Harry White, Clerk, Halesworth, Suffolk, to the Poor Law Commission, enclosing several examples of books in use in the Incorporated Hundred of Blything, Suffolk: 1. Book which lists the names of all persons admitted to the House, the time and by whom they are admitted: Nicholas Humphrey, Hale Wiffen, Susan Curdy, John Wiffen and Henry Reeve. 2. Number Book in which inmates of the house are classified under the heads of Men - Women - Boys - Girls for: Aldringham, Benacre, Blyford, Blythburgh, Bramfield, Brampton, Chediston, Cookley, Covehithe, Cratfield, Darsham, Easton Bavants, Frostenden, Halesworth, Henham, Henstead, Heveningham, Holton, Huntingfield, Knodishall, Leiston, Linstead Magna, Linstead Parva, Middleton, Peasenhall, Reydon, Rumburgh, Sibton, Sotherton, Southcove, Southwold, Spexhall, Stoven, Theberton, Thorington, Ubbeston, Uggeshall, Walberswick, Walpole, Wangford, Wenhaston, Westhall, Westleton, Wissett, Wrentham and Yoxford. 3. Classified Provision Book to enable the Governor to serve out meat meals, it being a rule of the establishment not to give meat or beer to inmates between the ages of 15 and 55 except in case of illness. 1st class refers to men, 2nd class to women and 3rd class to children of 13 years of age and the 4th class children 9 years old. 4. Provision Book in which articles of maintenance, such as beef, port, vegetables, coal, candles, beer, oatmeal etc, was received in the House entered. 5. Wheat Book showing quantity of wheat bought, and how used (examples of Mr Pattie and Mr Gaiknell). 6. Committee Book entries made of sums of money granted weekly by the Board to the Overseers of the Hundred on account of out-relief. 7. Parish Book showing an account of the relief of the whole Hundred. Includes the total amount of out relief granted in several parishes of the Hundred and belonging to the parish. 8. Annual Statement showing the income and expenditure of the Corporation under district heads. 9. Overseers Book in which relief to outdoor paupers is granted. 10. Warrant authorising parish officers to levy money by rate. At quarterly meetings of the Hundred the Directors and acting Guardians issue warrants to several overseers of the Hundred to liaise a sum of money to defray the expenses of the current quarter. This money paid is to the treasurer of the Hundred which he credits to the Corporation. The treasurer cannot pay any money without an order signed by three of the directors or acting guardians. Also enclosed with the above is a small sketch drawing of the [ground floor] of the workhouse. There appears also part of a report on the working of the union [unnamed]. Poor Law Union Number 432.
