Description	Folio 183. Letter from John Read [Guardian of the Blything Poor Law Union], Cratfield, to the Poor Law Commission, written at the request of William Fisher, Overseer in Cratfield, about the management of the poor there. Until a short while before, the poor had been employed and relieved under a class system agreed by the parishioners for nearly seven years without any discordancies, but because of dissatisfaction among the ratepayers this system had been discontinued without any replacement system. There are now about 20 able-bodied men out of employment. The overseer is hesitant to allow them relief without employment, fearing it might be seen as a misuse of the poor rate and might lay his account open to an appeal. If these men are put on the road he fears they will do little or no good. It seems that the Hundred of Blything will shortly be totally under the management of the Commission. He asks for the direction of the Commission by return of post, to lay before a parish meeting. Annotated: Mr Mott [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], 9 June 1835. Poor Law Union Number 432.
