Description | Folios 236-237. Letter from Harry White, Clerk to the Guardians of the Blything Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, acknowledging their last communication. The guardians have agreed that the Rules and regulations as sanctioned and confirmed by the Commission should be printed and distributed among the guardians, unless it is the Commission's intention to do this. He reminds the Commission to send down 'the necessary books' for the relieving officers as well as for the other officers of the union, of the form of bond to be signed by the treasurers, the contract for the surgeons, and the date when they have to start their duties. He directs their notice to a specific case. Mary Catchpole, belonging and residing in Wenhaston, had been struck of the list of eligible paupers on its revision, and desired at the last weekly meeting of the board to be put on the list again. The guardians had found that she had a son aged 13 living at home, and her other son had recently obtained a position in the police in London. They had resolved not to add her name to the list again until the Commission had communicated how far her son (in London) might contribute towards his mother's maintenance. Annotated: the Commission is unable to advise the board about Mary Catchpole, but consider they have 'exercised a just discretion' in the course they have taken. Poor Law Union Number 432. Counties: Suffolk. |
