Description | Folios 384-386. Letter from R M Hodge [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. He encloses for approval the appointment form for Henry Jennings as Collector. The form shows Jennings of St Mary's Parish, Truro, had been a cabinet maker. The salary is to be poundage as fixed by the 'Poor Law Commission'. The post became vacant after the previous collector, Eldred Roberts Pascoe, resigned as the office interfered with his business. Annotated: Jennings compounded with his creditors as recently as March 1848 and only offers the security of two auctioneers. Gulson [Edward Gulson, Inspector of the Poor Law Board] thinks that before sanctioning the appointment they should find out if a release has been signed by all his creditors. He notes that the relevant section of the form was not completed in the clerk's handwriting. 28 January 1849 Enquire whether the guardians are satisfied that Jennings has been released from liability to his creditors. [Henry Fleming, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Board] 29 January 1849. Paper Number: 2623/1849. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall. |
