Description | Folio 164. Letter from John D Taylor, Clerk to the Guardians of Bishop's Stortford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, requesting their sanction for altering the bedtime, from 8pm to 7pm during the winter months, for their 1st class able bodied inmates of the workhouse. Annotated: state that the Poor Law Board wish to give their fullest consideration to any recommendations from the guardians, but would like to know the grounds for deviating from the hours adopted in other unions. The board may properly sanction this application. If 8pm is a fitting hour in the summer months, there can be no great objection to 7pm in the winter. The inmates request it, and the master and guardians wish it. Signed by Sir J Walsham [John James Walsham, Poor Law Inspector]. Paper Number: 55613/1850. Poor Law Union Number 167. Counties: Hertfordshire and Essex. |
