Description Folios 65-69. Letter from Henry Saunders, Clerk to the Guardians of the Kidderminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, regarding salaries of officers. He forwards copies of resolutions passed by the Board the object of which was to reduce the salaries of the following officers. The clerk from £125 to £100. The master and matron from £100 to £80. Relieving officer of Kidderminster District £125 to £100. Relieving officer of Bewdley District £100 to £80. Nurse £25 to £20. He draws their attention to the amendment to the first resolution by the Reverend Joseph Fletcher. Resolution of the Board 2 May 1843. Moved by Mr John Lloyd, seconded by Mr Grove, that the salary of the clerk be reduced to £80 per annum. Amendment moved by the Reverend Joseph Fletcher, seconded by R P Turner: First; that it is in the interests of the union that all its officers be paid a liberal salary. Second; that the present salaries are not unreasonably liberal. Third; that the pressure of the times made it extremely difficult for businesses to make their parochial payments. Fourth; that the salaries of officers not residing in the workhouse be increased in value to the reduced price of provisions. Fifth; that when pressure is removed the salaries affected by this resolution be revised and increased if expedient. The resolution continues listing the proposed salaries, as above. The auditor's salary to remain at £20 and other salaries to remain as they are. Upon division the amendment was lost. Amendment proposed by Mr [Hooman], seconded by Mr Barnes. That the salary of the clerk be reduced to £100 per annum. Second amendment proposed by Mr Fletcher, seconded by Mr Heath. That the salary of the clerk be reduced to £110 per annum. The second amendment was lost and Mr [Hooman's] amendment carried by a fourteen to seven majority. Reverent R P Turner and the Chairman not voting. Moved by Mr Lloyd and seconded by Mr Grove; that the salary of the Chaplin be reduced to £50 per annum. Amendment moved by the Reverend Joseph Fletcher, seconded by Mr Heath; that the Chaplain's salary be not reduced. The amendment was carried by thirteen to nine. Moved by Mr Lloyd and seconded by Mr Grove; that the salary of the master and matron be reduced to £60 without encumbrance. Amendment moved by Reverend R P Turner and seconded by Reverend Joseph Fletcher; that the salary of the master and matron be not reduced but they pay for the maintenance of their children. Amendment moved by Mr Barnes and seconded by Mr [Tart]; that the salary of the master and matron be reduced to £80 and they pay for the maintenance of their children. Mr Barnes' amendment carried with a majority of nineteen to two. Mr Morton and the Chairman not voting. Moved by Mr Lloyd and seconded by Mr Grove; that the salary of the nurse be reduced to £15 per annum. Amendment moved by Reverend R P Turner and seconded by Mr Blakeway; that the salary of the nurse be reduced to £20 per annum. Amendment carried unanimously. Moved by Mr Lloyd and seconded by Mr Grove; that the salary of the relieving officer of Kidderminster District be reduced to £90 per annum. Amendment moved by Mr [Hooman] and seconded by Mr Beddoes; that the salary of the relieving officer of the Kidderminster District be reduced to £110 per annum. Amendment moved by Mr Stockdale and seconded by Mr Clarke; that the salary of the relieving officer of Kidderminster District be reduced to £100 per annum. Mr [Hooman's] amendment was carried with a majority of seventeen to one. Mr Stockdale, Grove, Lloyd, Knowles and the Chairman did not vote. Moved by Mr Lloyd and seconded by Mr Grove; that the salary of the relieving officer of the Bewdley District be reduced to £80 per annum. Carried unanimously. There followed other resolutions as to when the new salaries should commence and that the resolutions should be forwarded to the Poor Law Commission.
