Description | Folios 688-689. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union. They hear from Mr Senior [Edward Senior, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] that John Woolley, Reliving Officer, has neglected to pay contractors for bread. Irregularity or uncertainty in payment will prevent contractors with small capitals form tendering, and those who can put in higher tenders to cover the risk and loss of interests. The same officer misapplied the money ordered to go to non resident paupers and the auditor has reported unfavourably on the state of his accounts. Woolley was given a further trial at the request of the guardians but the Commissioners now believe his dismissal will be beneficial to the union. They request that the guardians discuss the matter at their next meeting. Paper Number: 12518/B/1841. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. |
