Description | Folio 698. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission headed 'Allowance of Beer to Paupers'. On 1 September 1842 the guardians responded to a petition from workhouse inmates for beer on Sunday with the bread and cheese granting men ¾ and women ½ a pint. At 6d per gallon the sum is trifling and there has been no act of insubordination so sanction for continuation is requested. Annotated: enquire whether the resolution originated in the recommendation of the medical officer. Paper Number: 12658/B/1841. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. |
