Description Folios 721-723. Letter from William Ashton, Bulwell, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission headed 'Relief to Able bodied'. He forwards a list of cases of relief to able bodied for approval. Handwritten list records the amounts of relief given in bread and/or money and for what period and, where appropriate, in what circumstances relief ceased. The ages of all are listed with details of the income of any members of the household. Except where stated relief is given on the grounds of no work. Basford Poor Law Union. Able bodied relieved 14 December 1841: Basford: Noah Birch, Labourer, Emilia [Emilia Birch] and two children. Basford: Richard Houghton, Mason, wife and eight children. Edward [Edward Houghton] and Elijah [Elijah Houghton], Masons, William [William Houghton], Sophia [Sophia Houghton], Richard [Richard Houghton], Sarah [Sarah Houghton], Alfred [Alfred Houghton], Eliza [Eliza Houghton]. Basford: Samuel Dyson, Labourer, Mary [Mary Dyson] and two children. Codnor: John Draper, Frame Work Knitter, widower, Sarah [Sarah Draper], Mary [Mary Draper], Elizabeth [Elizabeth Draper], and Emily [Emily Draper] all earning, Rebecca [Rebecca Draper], John [John Draper]. Arnold: Benjamin Marshall, Frame Work Knitter, Mary [Mary Marshall] and one child. John Fox, Frame Work Knitter, wife and four children. William Davies, Labourer, Mary [Mary Davies] and Ann [Ann Davies] both run lace. Bulwell: William Brittle, Cotton Spinner, relieved on arrival from Glossop, Derby. Thomas Richardson, widower engineer from Bury, Lancashire. Lambley: Issac Hawley, Collier, gone in search of work, Charlotte [Charlotte Hawley] and four children. Linby: John Jones, Weaver, Alice [Alice Weaver] and two children. Gave in quest of work. Papplewick: Joseph Radford, Cotton Spinner, Hannah [Hannah Radford] and two children on being removed from Mansfield and found work. Annotated: write accordingly. Annotated: the workhouse is still quite full and these cases must be sanctioned. Dated 22 December 1841. Sanction subject to any auditors disallowance of any illegal relief in money by relieving officers or overseers, the relief is subject to the question whether it was given under circumstances of sudden and necessity.
