Description Folios 236-237. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission, to Thomas Watkins, Clerk to the Guardians of the Cardiff Poor Law Union, acknowledging their letter of the 21 December 1844 requesting the appointment of a collector of poor rates for the town of Cardiff. The Commissioners have already stated that they can only direct the board of guardians to appoint a collector of poor rates, a part of whose duties would be to assist the overseers in making the poor rates. Moreover be the recent Act 7& 8 Vic c 101 s 61. The collector would be bound to obey the majority of the overseers in all things relating to his office. They go on to point out that this arrangement would cover their requirements in Cardiff. They have also noticed Cardiff have not replied to their query as to the remuneration of this post hitherto paid to the collectors; and forward a form of application for the appointment of a collector which they regret was omitted from the letter of the 7 December 1844. Paper Number: 19460/B/1845. Poor Law Union Number 613. Counties: Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire.
