Description | Folios 239-240. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission, to Thomas Watkins, Clerk to the Guardians of the Cardiff Poor Law Union, acknowledging their letter of the 25 December 1844 respecting the new valuation of the town of Cardiff. Stating that the proceedings in question are not in accordance with the act of parliament, nor calculated to give satisfaction to the ratepayers of the parish in general. It was the duty of the guardians to make a contract with a competent person to value the parish. Such valuation should be a permanent document for the use of the succeeding overseers of the workhouse. The rate should have been made from time to time. Pencil notes easily obliterated are of no avail. The Poor Law Commission wishes to know whether the surveyors who made these marks have been paid or not. [Folio 240 is a year guard.] Paper Number: 1197/B/1844. Poor Law Union Number 613. Counties: Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire. |
