Description | Folios 94-95. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, stating that the guardians regret the answer of the Commissioners respecting their order for prohibition of poor law relief. They ask them to reconsider that part of the order relating to non-resident widows and children and the giving of relief by loan to the able bodied. The board is of the opinion that relief should be extended to widows having three or more children less than eight years of age residing within a ten mile radius of the union. Also that relief by loan should be continued. Often due to inclemency of the weather, lack of trade etc. the agricultural labourers, nailers and needlemakers in the union are prevented from working and so are forced to enter the workhouse unless relieved by loan. This relief would be less expensive to parishes and more advantageous to the poor. Paper Number: 4317/C/1839. Poor Law Union Number 526. Counties: Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire. |
