Description | Folios 188-189. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union stating that the adoption of measures for relief of vagrants cannot be immediately enforced in all unions but expect them to be adopted over time. The Commission asks why only bread and water is to be provided? Is this to attract vagrants to seek admittance to the workhouse? They presume that the female attendant pauper will not be allowed to attend the female pauper ward until after the vagrants have left. Also to prevent infection and diseases to the workhouse they suggest the vagrants be washed and clothes purified. Copies of regulations for relief of vagrants is enclosed [not included]. Paper Number: 1268/B/1840. Poor Law Union Number 526. Counties: Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire. |
