The The Arts Council of Great Britain was established as an independent body in 1946 to be the principal channel for the Government's support of the arts. In 1994 the Scottish and Welsh Arts Councils became autonomous and the Arts Council of Great Britain became the Arts Council of England. The Councils' objectives are to develop and improve the understanding and practice of the arts and increase their accessibility to the public. The Arts Councils are responsible for the distribution of the proceeds of the National Lottery allocated to the arts. |
