Description	Notes of licences to female convicts to be at large, and notes of revocation of such licences, under the Penal Servitude Acts 1853 and 1864 endorsed on old captions and, in some cases, transfer papers. Each file can include a photograph (from 1871 onward), letters or notes from the prisoner, a Medical History sheet, reports of misconduct whilst in prison, the court of conviction, details of crime and of previous crimes.

Administrative/ biographical background	The Criminal Justice Act 1967 ( as amended by Criminal; justice Act 1972) provides the statutory authority for the release on licence of prisoners serving a life sentence or a sentence of imprisonment, and those serving detention under section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933. The grant of release under licence is the responsibility of the Home Secretary, who must however have consulted the Parole Board and obtained a favourable recommendation for release (and in the case of an indeterminate sentence of imprisonment or detention, after consultation with the Lord Chief Justice of England, together with the trial judge, if available).
