Various diplomatic records: protocols, ratifications, and renewals of treaties; preliminary articles of treaties; declarations by Great Britain to uphold treaties and agreements between foreign powers; the appointment of British and foreign ambassadors to enter negotiations and make treaties; declarations and reports of treaties; details of conventions between Great Britain and foreign powers; and other documents subsidiary to the above.

Arrangement

The records are arranged alphabetically and chronologically according to the country to which the document refers.

Access conditions Subject to 30 year closure unless otherwise stated
Physical condition A large proportion of the documents still have a seal or silver skippet (the small box that contained the seal) attached to them.
Custodial history The treaties were previously kept by the State Paper Office until its incorporation into the Public Record Office in 1854. However, some ratifications of treaties after 1760 were temporarily transferred to the Foreign Office and were housed in Whitehall Yard until their final removal to Chancery Lane
