Treasury Solicitor: Registered Files, Ministry of Supply (S Series)

Description and record details

Reference TS 62
Title Treasury Solicitor: Registered Files, Ministry of Supply (S Series)
Date 1939-1977
Description

Selected records from a single series of registered files of the Treasury Solicitor relating to work on behalf of the Ministry of Supply. Registration in this series commenced in 1939 and terminated in 1955, when a new file series for Supply-related matters was raised. Some papers continued to be added to existing files for a number of years, however.

The files reflect the major responsibilities of the Ministry of Supply in the period which included the research, development, design and production of supplies for the armed forces; the design and production of aircraft; control of the acquisition, disposal, manufacture and price of raw materials; the administration of Royal Ordnance factories; and the promotion and development of atomic energy. Other subjects include arbitrations, iron and steel nationalisation and denationalisation, the sale of Barrow Works, compulsory purchase and requisitioning, claims regarding inventions and patents, legislation, the wartime appointment of authorised controllers for companies, and claims for wrongful dismissal.

Arrangement

The files are arranged in the order of their original file references, which are based on a simple consecutive numbering system. The series prefix was changed from 'S' to 'S 1' in 1944, but this was purely cosmetic and did not lead to any change in the file sequence.
