Description

This series consists of a set of sound recordings of the trial of Fritz Erich von Lewinski, otherwise known as Von Manstein, who was accused of committing war crimes in Poland and the USSR between 1939 and 1944, and the log book of the sound recording operator for the period of the trial.

Administrative/ biographical background

The trial of von Manstein took place between 23 August and 19 December 1949 at Hamburg. He was accused of committing war crimes in Poland and Russia between 1939 and 1944 whilst Chief of Staff to von Runstedt in Poland and subsequently whilst commanding successively the 11th Army, the Army Group Don and the Army Group South. He was sentenced to eighteen years imprisonment on seventeen charges that he authorised and permitted the killing and maltreatment of Polish citizens by troops.

It should be noted that there is no surviving equipment upon which these sound recordings can be played.
