Administrative/ biographical background | General Headquarters Central Mediterranean Force (CMF) originally had responsibility for the investigation of war crimes in Italy, Austria, North Africa and Greece, and the investigation of war crimes in Austria was carried out by the Military Police. In January 1946, a War Crimes Investigation Section was detached from Italy to Austria and came under the direct control of the Assistant Director, Judge Advocate General (ADJAG), British Troops in Austria. In June 1947, a separate War Crimes Group, South East Europe was formed under the direct control of the Military Deputy, Judge Advocate General in London. This group operated until March 1948 when the balance of its outstanding work was handed over to the War Crimes Group, North-West Europe. |
