Administrative/ biographical background

Following the illegal Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Rhodesia in 1965, sanctions were imposed by the international community, and the Rhodesia Economic Department took a close interest in the impact of these sanctions, and the general economic condition of Rhodesia. It was also interested in monitoring the application of the sanctions. The Department had been established after UDI in the Commonwealth Office, with a sister Rhodesia Political Department, and this arrangement continued under the Foreign and Commonwealth Office until the two departments were merged as the Rhodesia Department in 1972.
