Administrative/ biographical background

The Central African Department was formed in 1979, one of the successors to the Central and Southern Africa Department (1973-1979). At its creation, the department had responsibilities for the following: Angola, Burundi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Zaire and Zambia. In 1980 it also acquired responsibilities Sao Tome and Principe and Zimbabwe.

The Central African Department ran until 1990 when it was succeeded by the Central and Southern Africa Department.
