Administrative/ biographical background | The Finance (Local Government and Development) Directorate was established in 1971, soon after the creation of the Department of the Environment. The directorate initially comprised five divisions: Local Authority Division, which dealt with local government finance and capital expenditure, and rate support grant policy;Local Taxation Division, which dealt with local government taxation and local valuation panel supervision;Highways Division, which dealt with financial matters in relation to highways and roads;Local Government and Development Division, which dealt with specific grants to local authorities; andLocal Government Superannuation Division, which dealt with local government superannuation. By 1973 the division dealing with local government superannuation had been dropped, thus leaving the directorate with four divisions. In 1974 the directorate was abolished after the bodies dealing with local government financial affairs were reorganised. |
