Description and record details

Reference BN 62
Title Home Office and Department of Health and Social Security: Approved Schools and Remand and Voluntary Homes: Files (CHR Symbol Series)
Date 1897-1990
Description

This series contains files relating to Home Office Children's Department and successors and successors inspectors' visits to approved schools and remand and voluntary homes run by local authorities and various voluntary bodies.

General files deal with routine visits to the homes; full inspection files deal with all aspects in depth. Special visits were made to investigate unrest among staff and absconders, and cases of indecency.

Copies of the Approved Schools Bulletin are also included in the series.

Arrangement

This series originated in the Home Office in 1949 when the system of registering files under a series of symbols (eg CHR) began to replace the older system whereby files were given a simple six-figure reference number.

The CHR file reference number includes a unique number for each school or home. From 1960 onwards, CHR symbol series files often have the year of creation of the file as the first numerical element of the file reference.
