| Administrative/ biographical background | In November 1941 the Directorate of Tube Alloys (DTA) was set up to continue research into the problems of developing atomic weapons. The DTA was supervised by a Consultative Council, chaired by Sir John Anderson, the Lord President of the Council, which remained under his control when he became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1943. The Council was advised by a technical committee of scientists. In August 1943 the Quebec Agreement established a collaborative approach to atomic weapons development between Britain and the USA. British and Canadian research groups had already been working together in this area. A Combined Policy Committee was now set up in Washington to co-ordinate the efforts of British, Canadian and American groups. |
