Description | This series contains original correspondence relating to New South Wales. Also includes correspondence relating to Van Diemen's Land (later Tasmania) up to 1825. |
Arrangement | Bound volumes arranged chronologically within the following subject headings: Despatches (letters of the governors), Offices (letters of government departments and other organisations) and Individuals (arranged alphabetically). Each volume with a contents list, or précis of each letter giving name of correspondent, date of letter and subject matter. In the early period there are separate volumes for Port Jackson, Norfolk Island, Hobart Town and Port Dalrymple. The series includes a large number of case volumes. |

Administrative/ biographical background | New South Wales was named by Captain Cook who landed at Botany Bay in 1770. In 1788 a settlement was founded. In 1901 New South Wales joined the new Commonwealth of Australia. Originally New South Wales administered much of eastern Australia. Tasmania was separated in 1825, Victoria in 1851 and Queensland in 1859. New Zealand was also under New South Wales until 1841. |
