Administrative/ biographical background | Trinidad was a Spanish colony until 1797 when it was occupied by Britain. It was formally ceded to Britain in 1802. The island of Tobago (formerly administered through the Windward Islands government) was amalgamated with Trinidad from 1 January 1889 after which time the colony was known as Trinidad and Tobago. From 1958-1962 Trinidad and Tobago was a member state of the Federation of the West Indies. It became a fully independent state within the Commonwealth on 31 August 1962, and a republic in 1976. |
