Administrative/ biographical background | In 1883 that part of New Guinea not claimed by the Netherlands was annexed by Queensland. In 1884 a British protectorate was proclaimed and a special commissioner appointed. In 1888 it was annexed to the British crown. In 1901 the territory was assigned to the Commonwealth of Australia for five years and in 1906 it became a territory of the Commonwealth under the name Papua. |
