Administrative/ biographical background

The Order was created in 1818 for the exclusive benefit of natives of Malta and the Ionian Islands and of other British subjects holding high position in those territories or in 'Our Naval Service in the Mediterranean'. In 1868 it was extended to the colonies generally. In 1879 distinguished persons connected with the conduct of foreign affairs were admitted.
