Colonial Office: Indexed Précis of Incoming Correspondence

Description and record details

Reference CO 714
Title Colonial Office: Indexed Précis of Incoming Correspondence
Date 1795-1874
Description

This series consists of analytical, chronologically ordered précis of incoming communications relating to various colonial possessions. Not all of the colonies are equally catered for: some have no précis of communications under certain categories, such as individual correspondents; some colonies have précis only, with no accompanying indexes. The series was compiled as a finding aid by the Colonial Office librarian, who then had custody of the original correspondence.

Arrangement

The volumes are arranged by colony, with one volume forming an alphabetical index providing the date of entries on various subjects in the chronologically ordered, analytical précis volumes. The précis entries are arranged according to correspondent, with categories for governors general, government departments and for individuals. Within each category, entries are in chronological order.
