Administrative/ biographical background | Under the Defence (Transfer of Functions) Act 1964, the Admiralty, War Office and Air Ministry were absorbed into an enlarged Ministry of Defence under a Secretary of State for Defence from 1 April 1964. As a result, the post of Permanent Under Secretary of State (PUS) for Defence was created. The PUS was the professional head of civilian staff in the Ministry of Defence and also a member of the Defence Council. The first PUS was Sir Henry Hardman, who had previously served as Permanent Secretary to the Minister of Defence and was succeeded as follows:- Sir Henry Hardman 1964-1966Sir James Dunnett 1966-1974Sir Michael Cary 1974-1976Sir Frank Cooper 1976-1982Sir Clive Whitmore 1983-1988Sir Michael Quinlan 1988-1992Sir Christopher France 1992 onwards |
