Administrative/ biographical background

The work of the Directorate of Scientific Intelligence (DSI) was concentrated on studies of the USSR covering electronics and electronic engineering, chemistry and metallurgy, physics and engineering, and guided weapons and space science, primarily from a defence angle but also covering basic research in all fields. The primary military interest of the Division of Atomic Energy Intelligence (DAEI) was the study of intelligence on nuclear weapons, in which the main target was the USSR but other potentially nuclear weapons countries were also covered; it was also responsible for studying the peaceful uses of atomic energy on a global basis.
