Administrative/ biographical background

The Rhodesia Department was formed when the Central Africa Department of the Commonwealth Relations Office was split as part of the general restructuring of responsibilities which resulted from the changes in levels of work relating to the states of the former Central African Federation after the unilateral declaration of independence by Rhodesia on 11 November 1965. Relations with the illegal regime, and also general questions relating to the former states of the old Central African Federation were handled by this department until August 1966 when the Commonwealth Office was formed and responsibilities were split between two sister departments, Rhodesia Economic, and Rhodesia Political.
