Administrative/ biographical background | The Malawi and Zambia Department was formed when the former Zambia Department, Malawi Department and Malawi and Central Africa Economic Department were merged, part of the general restructuring of responsibilities which resulted from the changes in levels of work relating to the states of the former Central African Federation after the unilateral declaration of independence by Rhodesia. A separate Zambia Department was again created under the Commonwealth Office. The Department was abolished upon the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968, when responsibility for relations with Zambia passed to the Central African Department. |
