Administrative/ biographical background | The Atlantic Department was created in 1964 to handle UK and Commonwealth political relations with Canada, the Commonwealth Caribbean islands, and non-Commonwealth mainland America, taking over work previously carried out by the Western and United Nations Department. Responsibility for relations with Ireland were added in 1967. Economic relations were the responsibility of other specialised economic relations departments. The Atlantic Department continued in this role in the Commonwealth Office, and was finally wound up upon the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968, with responsibility passing to the Latin American Department and the North American Department. |
