Description | Escheators were the royal officials responsible for maintaining the king's rights as ultimate feudal lord of all land, and for administering land which fell into the king's hands by reason of death or forfeiture. This series contains the particulars of account sent by the escheators to the Exchequer to await enrolment for auditing in the Pipe Office. They contain details of the property accounted for, its situation, extent and value, and the reason why it had been seized into the King's hands. |
