Title | Exchequer: King's Remembrancer: Miscellaneous Books, Old Covers |
Date | c1200-c1600 |
Description | This series consists of the original covers and medieval and Tudor re-bindings removed from the Red Book of the Exchequer, the Book of Fees, and the cartularies of the abbeys of Malmesbury, Godstow, Torre, and Ramsey, Warwick College and Coventry Priory. All the bindings are of skin on board, for which oak was most commonly the wood used. Some covers have the remains of brass fastenings or clasps; and some the remains of the binding cords, exhibiting various styles of binding. The bindings have some evidential value for the historic custody and use of the volumes to which they relate. |
