Department of Trade and Industry and successors: Standards, Weights and Measures...

Description and record details

Reference FV 9
Title Department of Trade and Industry and successors: Standards, Weights and Measures Division and successors: Registered Files (SQ Series)
Date 1965-1989
Description

These files deal with proposals to provide an evaluation and information service on office machinery and equipment (other than computers) for all organisations in the public sector. The proposals were put forward because the ministry's sponsorship responsibility for the office equipment industry combined with its general responsibility for considering procurement financed by public funds could contribute to technological advance in industry. A working party on quality assessment of office machinery was set up in January 1967. The ministry's Standards Division, which had been associated with the project, took over responsibility for it later that year.

Arrangement

The earliest papers on these files were originally created by the Ministry of Technology (MINTECH) in its Mechanical Engineering Products Division, which was responsible for encouraging productivity in the mechanical and electrical engineering industries. These papers were later re-registered into the SQ series and contain as a result papers from both MINTECH and the Standards, Weights and Measures Division of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
