Administrative/ biographical background

The Local Government Board was set up in 1871. It took over from the Privy Council and the Secretary of State for Home Affairs some public health and local government functions, together with the powers and duties of the Poor Law Board. In 1919 the Board was dissolved, its functions passing to the new Ministry of Health.
