Administrative/ biographical background

Originally part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, in 1965 responsibility for common land fell to the new Ministry of Land and Natural Resources, and was passed through three divisions in the next five years: Land Use Division 1965-1967, Countryside Division 1967-1969, and Planning Division C 1969-1970. This was superseded by the Department of the Environment 1970-1997, which was itself re-organised into the Department of the Environment, Transport, and the Regions in 1997.
