Letter from Andrew Bell, of Amble Hope House, near Alnwick, to the Poor Law Commission [Poor Law Board], concerning a dispute about the sum at which owners of the tithe rent charge should be rated in the Poor and Highway Books in the township of Twisel [Twizel, in the Berwick-upon-Tweed Union]. According to an enclosed paper [not included], the tithe owner's rate includes a 5% deduction in the commutation sum to cover [agency expense]. The rate payers protest against this and insist that the tithe owner should be rated at the sum mentioned in the apportionment. Annotated: to send to Bell a copy of the circular (September 1840) on the rating of the rent charge to the poor rate and the deductions to be allowed. Paper Number: 8213/1848. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Reverend Edward A Breton of Charmouth [a Guardian for Axminster Poor Law Union], regarding the pauper named Lock from Catherstone [Bridport Poor Law Union], recently lodging in Charmouth. In response to his letter, they state that a removal order would be valid so long as it is made within 21 days of a chargeability order being issued. On the point whether the overseer of Catheston could be prosecuted for his actions in procuring lodgings in Charmouth for the man with a view to transferring liability for relief, the Commission considers that a case could be made.
