A labourer from Thorington by the name of Rawleston, in receipt of 10s per week for his wife and seven children owing to his wife's confinement was allowed 3 stones of flour. 2. A labourer from Halesworth by the name of Gilbert, aged 29 years, in receipt of 10s per week for his wife and five children was allowed 2 stones of flour. Annotated: the guardians are justified in allowing payments of flour. The Commissioners are unable to judge the circumstances of these cases from the limited information provided. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to the Reverend Henry Edward Knatchbull, Vicar of North Elmham, acknowledging his letter regarding a man belonging to the parish lately marrying his wife's niece, whose husband, a transported convict, was still alive and whose late settlement was the parish of Reepham. Knatchbull asked if a prosecution may not be instituted against the parties in the name of and at the expense of the parish; the parties though not actually in receipt of relief being liable to become paupers as a result of the marriage. Folios 526-529. Letter from Henry Saunders, Clerk to the Guardians of the Kidderminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, regarding the case of Ann Tyler. 'By direction of the Board I beg to forward you the inclosed particulars relative to the Inmate of the workhouse as to whom you were applied to by the Rev Thos Powell [Thomas Powell], Chaplain of the Union'. Note Referencing the letter from the Poor Law Commission dated 21 November 1846 relative to the letter from Thomas Powell, requesting help for an inmate to be sent to the penitentiary at Birmingham. The board have made enquiries and found that the inmate, Ann Tyler aged about 20, has been an inmate several times over the last three or four years and is now 'labouring under venereal disease'. She is in the venereal ward and has expressed contrition for her past conduct and wants to be sent to the penitentiary at Birmingham. She has twice attempted to commit suicide. It was resolved that together with the foregoing a report from the medical officer on her condition be forwarded to the Poor Law Commission. Copy Report from Thomas Thursfield, Medical Officer to Kidderminster Poor Law Union. Ann Tyler, a girl of bad character, previously treated for syphilis, left the house, has now returned with a recurrence of the disease and is in the venereal ward. She has twice attempted suicide. She shows no signs of mental aberration but is sulky and stubborn, aware of her wretched condition and anxious to better it. Annotated: acknowledge and thank. Inform the Reverend Powell that the statement received from the board makes no proposition on the admittance and payment for Ann Tyler to be admitted to the asylum referred to. 2 December 1846. Candidates as follows: Mr Buck, Keyworth; Mr Marshall, Heanor [Derbyshire]; Mr Saunders, Carrington; Mr Heath, Snienton [Sneinton]; Mr Riley, Ilkestone [Ilkeston, Derbyshire]; Mr Pogson, Gedling who was elected. Future votes to be by ticket. Clerk to ask [Edward Gulson, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], to attend the next meeting. Letter from Mr Potter, Clerk to the Magistrates, Yoxford, Suffolk, to the Poor Law Commission, requesting answers to his questions: If a man has paid one shilling a week for the maintenance of a bastard child before the proposed last act by order of the magistrates, was he still liable to the same fine or for imprisonment for three months, in the case of non payment. If a bastard child was born one week before the proposed last act, can it be affiliated now or a similar fine and punishment be enforced in case of non payment.
