Letter from John D Taylor, Clerk to the Guardians of Bishop's Stortford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, enclosing copy of a resolution regarding the emigration of John Knightley. The guardians request the usual order be issued. Enclosed: Extract from the minutes of the meeting of the board of guardians of the Bishop's Stortford Poor Law Union, held on 15 January 1851. Knightley, single, aged 23 years, belonging to the parish of Stocking Pelham wishes to emigrate to Australia. He has the approval of the Emigration Commission. It was resolved that no more than £10 be granted towards the expenses. William Sworder, Guardian of Stocking Pelham signed the resolution. Annotated: emigration order may be issued. Letter from Henry Saunders, Clerk to the Guardians of the Kidderminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, regarding appointment of collector for the parish of Dowles [Shropshire]. He refers to their letter of 22 June 1846. The amount of rates collected in Dowles is £120 per annum and there is no overseer. The guardians cannot appoint a collector under the order of 6 December 1836 because it only gave authority for a month or upon the death, resignation or removal of the appointed collector. They seek the appointment because the affairs of the parish have been poorly managed recently. Annotated: explain that the guardians can appoint under the order in force. Send a form. 24 June 1846. Folios 355-356. Letter from Samuel King, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, advising them that on 2 July the guardians had given notice to Robert Rudd, Schoolmaster and his wife, the schoolmistress, that their services would be dispensed with at the end of the present quarter. He goes on to say that at the meeting held on 23 July, the visiting committee again reported that the conduct of the schoolmistress was so bad that the guardians were obliged to suspend her from their service. The guardians request permission to discharge these officers for their general misconduct. Annotated: Dr James Phillips Kay, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner, states that he had received letters from the chairman of the board of guardians and from the Reverend P Gurdon [Reverend Philip Gurdon] of the Visiting Committee, and he is convinced that there is such a feud between the master and schoolmistress and master as to consider the stay of the latter impossible.
